The Voice of the Listener and Viewer 14th Annual Children’s Conference takes place on Wednesday the 5th November this year, at the New Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden, London WC2, from 9.15 am – 4.45 pm. This year the theme is “Children’s Television: a glimmer of hope”. The VLV has offered Save Kids’ TV supporters a special discounted rate of £65 including VAT, as opposed to the usual rate for individuals of £88. This rate is not available to corporates – only to individuals.
To obtain the special Save Kids’ TV discounted rate you need to write to Linda Forbes Voice of the Listener and Viewer, PO Box 401, Gravesend, Kent, DA12 9FY and send a cheque for £65. Please quote the discount code SKTV/VLV in your letter.
Since the date is quite soon, it might be an idea to email or call Linda to confirm your intention to book under the discount scheme. Linda.Forbes@vlv.org.uk T: 01474 352835
An alternative is to pay £25 to join the VLV, and pay the £45 VLV members rate for the conference. For only a fiver more you get a year’s membership, with special rates at all other events, as well as the VLV Bulletin.
Entitled “Children’s Television: a Glimmer of Hope?” the conference is a timely chance to get the message across to politicians and the public that action is needed urgently.
Ofcom’s research has highlighted public concern at the decline in quality public service provision for children. Their last report suggested some possible solutions, but also stressed that action is now with the politicians. At the VLV Conference, experts in the field, including politicians, broadcasters and campaigners, will be questioned on how they see the future, and what is currently being done. The conference will also look at the power and influence of Disney, and at regulating the new media.
The keynote speaker will be Floella Benjamin OBE, who is a broadcaster, independent producer, writer and has been a member of Ofcom’s Content Board.
Other speakers include:
John Grogan MP, Chair All Party Parliamentary Group on the BBC
Ed Vaizey MP, Conservative Shadow Culture Minister
Richard Deverell, Controller BBC Children’s Programming
Nick Wilson, Director Children’s Programmes, Five
Janey Walker, Head of Education & Managing Editor Commissioning, Channel 4
Huw Rossiter, Director of Communications, S4C
Anna Home OBE, Chair, Save Kids’ TV
Nigel Pickard, Director of Family Entertainment, RDF
Maggie Brown, media author and journalist
The chairing will be shared by:
Richard Lindley, VLV’s new Chairman
Gillian Reynolds MBE, journalist and broadcaster
Kate Bulkley, media commentator and journalist
Roy Thompson, former BBC Head of Children’s Commissioning
