I love children’s television. As a young viewer, a bad day at school was always made infinitely more bearable by the promise of a new episode of Educating Marmalade, Bananaman, Grange Hill or Press Gang. Even now, I am more likely to switch on my television in the afternoon than in the evening. Why? Because children’s television provides much of the best comedy, drama and animation to be found. Writing for children’s television has been a great pleasure, because of the dedication and the skill of the editors, producers directors and actors I have worked with, and because of the quality of the product. Let’s not deprive our children of what they deserve - new, top quality, home-grown children’s television.
Phil Porter’s writing for younger audiences includes My Parents Are Aliens and Pocoyo for Granada and Pinocchio for the Royal Opera House. His play Smashed Eggs won the Arts Council Children’s Award.
